10 Comic Book Inventions That Could Actually Change The World

5. BOOM! Tubes

There would be no more awesome way to travel (except, maybe flying) than getting from A to B via a BOOM tube. Another Jack Kirby concept, BOOM tubes open up a stable wormhole from one place to another and allow people to walk through. BOOM-ing is the only way to reach the New God homeworlds of New Genesis and Apokolips, as well. According to New Gods Issue 1 (1971) a BOOM tube €œstems from the waves of the mind€ - which makes sense, as they both appear and disappear into thin air, once all parties have exited the tube safely. They are usually controlled by €˜Mother Boxes€™ (more on those later). There appears to be no carbon emission to worry about (unless you count the residual Kirby crackle, of course) and no mess either. Plus, as a storytelling device, it enables characters to travel from place to place with only minimal interruption to the narrative. In more recent DC comic books, Justice League member Cyborg discovered that he could replicate the BOOM tube technology and now The League use it to get from place to place on Earth. It would certainly cut down the cost of this year€™s holiday!

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
