Comics: The Amazing Spider-Man #542 - 545

What Happened: Following the events of "Civil War," which saw Peter Parker come out as Spider-Man on live television, Pete's life took a turn. His Aunt May was shot and on the verge of death (as she often is in the books), and Peter wasn't handling it well. He ends up going to Mephisto to try and make a deal to save her life.

Mephisto agrees to save May's life and remove his unmasking from the world's memory, but he requires something in return. He insists that the only way he will make this happen is to remove Mary Jane and his marriage from history as well.

Why Was It Insulting: If you thought fans were rabid about the "Clone Saga," you've never met someone who read "One More Day." The story reversed more than 20 years of comic book history by deleting one of the most important and long-lasting relationships in comics.

This reversed 20 years of continuity from the Marvel Universe, and a large number of readers rage-quit the series as a result. The storyline was likely the most controversial Spider-Man story ever to hit the books, and that includes the "Clone Saga," which says something about how insulted fans were at the drastic change of events "One More Day" gave them.
