Comics: "Sins Past" Storyline

What Happened: Gwen Stacy famously died via the machinations of the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man #121. It was a pivotal moment in comics and an early example of "fridging" a female character. Peter Parker never truly healed from her death, and it was one of the most devastating moments in his life.

In the 2004 story "Sins Past," her death was given a kick in the balls by writer J. Michael Straczynski when it was revealed that Gwen had an affair with Norman Osborne, aka, the Green Goblin when she was still dating Peter.

Not only did the two have an affair, but they also had a couple of twin children to boot. Gwen was going to come clean about the affair, but Gobby had other plans for the kiddies, which retroactively gave him motive to kill her.

Why Was It Insulting: The storyline cheapened Gwen's death in a way that made it far more of a Fridging moment than it was previously. Fans hated the idea of Gwen cheating on Peter, especially when it was with the monster who killed her.

It didn't help that the illustration of the two having sex was creepy as hell. The frames switched between Osborn's face and the Goblin's in such a way as to make the reader cringe before quickly turning the page.
