10 Comic Book Origin Changes Fans Hated

1. Heroes Reborn

Heroes Reborn isn't necessarily a change in origin for a single character — it's more of a complete overhaul of every major Marvel character, and few people enjoyed it. The idea was to bring back Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, who had left Marvel to form Image Comics and have them redo everything.

The story held that following the supposed deaths of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, they were transported to an alternate Earth, where they were reborn. Their rebirth was really a reimagining of the characters, and Marvel canceled a bunch of series, restarted them with the new characters, and soon after it was published, it was scrapped and forgotten.

For the FF, Ben Grimm was brought a bit forward in time to make him a pilot during the Gulf War, and Johnny & Susan Storm were merely financial backers for Reed's rocket test flight. There were several changes like that made to all of the characters, and the fans didn't like it at all.

Poor sales resulted in the whole series being cut, and Marvel quietly returned things back to normal. There were problems resulting from the outsourced work, and Lee and Liefeld ended up leaving early in the run. Walt Simonson was brought in, but it didn't help, and the series was canceled within a year.
