10 Comic Book Plots That Will Never Be Resolved
1. S.H.I.E.L.D
Jonathan Hickman is known for his huge-scale stories filled with intricate storytelling. He wrote a years long run on Avengers and New Avengers that brought together all of the Marvel Universe for a grand finale in Secret Wars. But before that, he had S.H.I.E.L.D.
The series revealed the secret history of Marvel's premiere spy agency and tied it in to a sweeping historical epic, reaching back to the dawn of civilisation. The series was recounted by an immortal Leonardo da Vinci and reimagined Marvel history to include Sir Isaac Newton as a Sorcerer Supreme and a Brood invasion in ancient Egypt.
The series went on hiatus in 2011 and hasn't been continued since. What really makes this one weird is that both Hickman and artist Dustin Weaver have said that they've handed finished scripts for the remaining issues over to Marvel, they just haven't been released yet for whatever reason.
Marvel have been completely silent on any potential release of the final two issues and the closest the series has even come to being mentioned recently is Newton's appearance in the excellent Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme.
With #4 now years in the past and Hickman no longer even working at Marvel, the chances of ever seeing the end of S.H.I.E.L.D seem pretty much nonexistent.
