10 Comic Book Supervillains Who Created Their Own Worst Enemy

1. Blight And Terry McGinnis' Batman

Batman Beyond remains one of the absolute coolest reinventions of Batman ever committed to print or screen, and at its centre is Terry McGinnis.

Terry (voiced by Will Friedle), was just a kid trying to survive high school in Neo-Gotham when his paths crossed with Bruce Wayne. Terry's father, Warren, was a scientist at Wayne-Powers, and was murdered by the company's CEO Derek Powers for having harboured evidence revealing the company's illegal viral weapons research.

Terry decides to take matters into his own hands, and ends up discovering Wayne's secret. He then steals the Batsuit and decides to go after Derek, who he realises was responsible for his father's murder.

While Terry was initially unable to take down Derek, he did accidentally seal his fate. In their debut scuffle, Powers was exposed to the deadly virus he'd been trying to keep under wraps. He has to undergo serious radiation therapy in order to stave off the infection, which transforms him into Blight, a radioactive supervillain with a healthy green glow.

Powers' decision to kill Warren McGinnis inspired Terry to become Batman, which then led to his transformation into Blight.

That said, even though Blight would eventually perish during his final confrontation with the new Batman, he did get to deliver an absolute stonker of a line beforehand. When Terry confronts Powers and tells him he killed his father, he responds by saying, "do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?"

The line itself is hilarious on its own, but to see it come out of a big glowy skeleton man following a brief pause? It's kind of wonderful.

1. In What Year Did Batman Beyond First Air?

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
