10 Comic Characters Who Actually Stayed Dead
6. X-Statix
In 2001, the entire X-Men line was relaunched and many books were drastically altered. One of the biggest changes was that Cable's paramilitary mutant group X-Force was replaced by a team of all new characters. This team would soon change its name to X-Statix.
The members of X-Statix were unlike the traditional heroes that had come before. Instead there were vapid and shallow, immature narcissists only interested in becoming major celebrities. The book was a parody of the superhero genre and was a biting satire of celebrity culture, including black humour like a character who was a thinly veiled parody of Princess Diana (it was even meant to be her originally).
One of the most subversive elements of the series was how happy it was to slaughter its own cast. In the first issue alone, all but two members of the team were wiped out. The body count continued to rise as the series went on, hitting a peak during the final issue.
Knowing that the book was cancelled, writer Peter David ended with the entire team cut down by a hail of gunfire. Main characters Orphan, Anarchist, Vivisector, Venus Dee Milo and even Dead Girl are killed. The only survivor was Doop, the strange green blob monster that served as their cameraman.
