10 Comics Heroes Who Lost Themselves (But Saved The Universe)

6. Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) - Final Night

Wally West Flash Forward
DC Comics

Arguably Earth's greatest ever Green Lantern, Hal Jordan has had iconic moments of heroism, but also his fair share of heel turns to the side of evil. His stint as fear entity Parallax was a dark time for the Emerald Knight that ended on a more heroic note with his sacrifice in the Final Night storyline.

The 1996 crossover tale sees the Earth (and solar system by extension) under threat from the Sun-Eater. The cosmic entity is on its way to the solar system and after a failed attempt by Earth's heat-generating heroes to divert its attention by creating a star of their own, it consumes the Sun's energy.

The story deals with survival and disaster mitigation instead of epic battles, a trait unique for a crossover of its scope.

It culminated with Jordan (as Parallax) sacrificing himself to destroy the Sun-Eater and restart the dying star. This act, followed by several others, was key in Jordan's redemption arc and paved the path to his eventual return as Green Lantern years later.
