6. Rick Grimes Joins The Walking Dead

If you've read The Walking Dead, you probably know of the book's penchant for putting a splash page at the very end of the story as a sort of cliffhanger. Nearly every issue did this, and it was one of the best selling points of the book, seeing as most readers couldn't wait for the next issue to hit stands.

While that was a great piece of storytelling, the books didn't always rely on it to drive the story; some events happened mid-issue, and they were just as compelling. The series ran for 193 issues, and in the 192nd issue, something the readers thought impossible ended up happening.

Rick Grimes, the central protagonist of the entire series was shot. A lot. It occurred while he was visiting the Commonwealth.

He had done what he does best - becoming a respectful member of the community - but in doing so, he made an enemy out of the spoiled son of the Commonwealth's governor.

Sebastian Milton went into Rick's room, surprising him while he was in bed. They passed some words, and Sebastian shot Rick. He then apologised and shot him two more times.

Rick collapsed on the bed, and the young man fled, leaving the reader to stare at the last panel on the third page of the book, scared to death Rick wasn't going to get out of it this time...
