10 Comics That Saved Hated Characters
1. Deadpool - Deadpool #17
With how beloved a character Deadpool is nowadays, it's easy to forget that he had a phase of being one of the worst characters in Marvel comics.
Although his hijinks remained much the same, the way Deadpool treated those close to him was profoundly different - and profoundly worse. The best example of this is his roomate/prisoner, Blind Al, whom the 1998 comics revealed he trapped in a torture room whenever she displeased him - or just when he felt like it - as well as systematically torturing and murdering anyone who tried to help the blind old woman escape.
However, in Deadpool #17 this all changes. After the issues leading up to it suggest that Deadpool had begun to understand the impact of his actions and deeply regret them, the Merc' with a Mouth finally begins the process of redeeming himself to Al and those others close to him, the first step being him sealing up the room where he tortured her.
While it doesn't fix all of his past actions, this marks the start of Deadpool as the well-meaning anti-hero that we know - and love - today.
