10 Comics That Saved Hated Characters

2. Jason Todd - Batman: Under The Red Hood

With people being so adverse to Jason Todd that they actively voted to have him killed, it's safe to say that his return as the Red Hood really served to bring interest to a previously unliked character.

Although Death in the Family definitely generated sympathy for the murdered Robin, it didn't change the character of Todd himself. The first comic after his resurrection did however, taking Todd from being a slightly whiny disliked sidekick, to a rebellious badass with a reasonable justification for his angst.

It also served to diversify the Bat-kids from a pack of wholesome do-gooders into a series of people with wildly different motivations and moral codes.

One of the most interesting dynamics in the Batclan is that of how the various other characters deal with Jason as the black sheep of the family. Balancing watching all the respective cast deal with the guilt and emotions dredged up by seeing Jason alive again, and their concern and upset in regards to his murders appears can't be easy, but it is exactly this that makes Jason's emergence as the Red Hood such a smart move.
