10 Comics That Turned Out Nothing Like You Expected
4. Crossed +100
Crossed is basically the comic equivalent of one of those uber-gory, endlessly vicious horror movies. Every crime imaginable happens in it all the time, and you almost continuously are introduced to hopeful characters who might be able to fight against the infected bloodthirsty enemy, only to see them brutally dismembered, assaulted, and murdered.
So when it was revealed Alan Moore of all people was doing a Crossed special, many wondered how far he'd go with it in terms of it being totally messed up. This is, after all, the same guy who set up the infamous "fire and a hacksaw" scene in Watchmen - imagine how insane he could get without any limitations to hold him back!
As it turned out, Moore would get weird with it, but not in the way you might have expected. Crossed +100 was set a hundred years after the Crossed exploded into the world and caused basically an apocalypse, and - much as our language is different to that which we used a hundred years ago - Alan sought to change the language of the characters in the story to reflect the different time period.
This involved replacing many, many words with replacements that you could just about make out given the context and rough meaning of the word itself. This made it easy enough if one word was different in a sentence, but often whole chunks of dialogue would be, leaving readers basically learning a new language when they were initially just in it for the gore.
