10 Comics Too Big To Fail (That Did Anyway)

3. The Incredible Hulk

FANTASTIC FOUR Alex Ross
Marvel Comics

The Incredible Hulk is easily one of Marvel's greatest superheroes, and his comics have sold well for decades. Why then did Marvel cancel the series so soon after it was published? If you didn't know, that's what happened with the first Incredible Hulk series, and fans are still scratching their heads asking why.

It's hard to imagine a time when the Hulk wasn't one of the best-known characters in the Marvel Universe, but when his series debuted, he was brand spanking new. Still, the books gained an audience, and it was looking like the Hulk might be around for a while.

As it happens, the first Incredible Hulk series only ran for a whopping six issues. That's all it got before Marvel had enough and pulled the plug. The Hulk didn't exactly go away, he just didn't have his own series any longer, and it would be some time before he would.

He showed up in the Avengers, and two years after The Incredible Hulk's cancellation, he started appearing in Tales to Astonish. As his popularity picked up, Marvel decided it was time to give the green guy another chance with a new series launch in 1968, though it started with issue #102, which picked up following the events in Tales to Astonish.
