10 Controversial Comic Book Retcons Fans Hated

One of the most controversial events ever to take place in the Marvel Universe occurred after the first Civil War. When the higher ups at Marvel, along with the editorial team, decided that Peter Parker was no longer relatable to his audience due to his marriage to Mary Jane Watson, despite the constant high number of sales, it was decided that the marriage would be retconned out of existence.

During Civil War, Peter Parker revealed his identity as Spider-Man to the world and, as a result, became the target of assassins, super-villains, and crime-lords.

So, when a sniper misses Peter and hits Aunt May by accident, Spider-man makes a deal with Mephisto to bring her back. However, the price Mephisto asks is the problem many people have with this storyline, as it meant that not only would Peter's marriage be erased, he would ultimately regress as a character, to the point where he was more or less indistinguishable from his teenage counterpart; struggling to get through his day, and living in his Aunt's basement.

The result of this was the new run of the Amazing Spider-Man, 'Brand New Day', which despite having good stories and art, was generally disliked by many fans.
