10 Crazy Comic Books Way Better Than They Had Any Right To Be

The Tick is an example of something small which takes on a life of its own. Created as a newsletter mascot for a local comic book store by a teenager, nobody ever had a reason to expect anything out of The Tick.

However, the character became popular enough for the store to throw up the cash for creator, Ben Edlund to make a full comic and from there it was an indie hit, eventually landing with a cartoon on Fox Kids.

Before the cartoon made The Tick a household name, the original comic was among the earliest successes of an incredibly self-aware book which pokes fun of all the superhero tropes while inserting a humorous element of the mundane into a world inhabited by fantastic super powered beings.

When you add to that a sometimes dangerous and completely delusional main character, and team him with someone like Arthur, who is a living embodiment of mundanity, the reason that this series has endured and spawned many sequels, reboots and immitations over the years is clear.
