10 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy DC Comics
6. There's Another Implosion On The Cards
The DC Implosion of 1978 had a jokey name - a spin on the company's then-recent "DC Explosion" marketing campaign, boasting about all their recently launched new titles - but the event itself was a big deal for the publisher. Buoyed by their continued dominance over the market, DC took the unprecedented step of introducing 57 new titles between 1975 and 1978.
It turned out they'd bitten off more than they could chew, and the amount of comics combined with the economic recession meant DC abruptly cancelled 40% of its comics and laid off loads of their staff. Sound familiar? The parallels between the DC Implosion and the company's New 52 relaunch are a little too close for comfort. Like in 1975, DC launched a huge number of new titles in 2011. 52 new titles, in fact, and they've launched even more since then to boot. Of the new titles that started since 2011, almost all of them have been cancelled.
Perhaps not a great omen, and it makes it hard to be a fan of a DC Comic that isn't Superman or Batman, because you never know how long it'll be around for. But if everyone thought like that, you'd miss out on so many great comics (Animal Man was a definite highlight, ended before its time), so we just have to accept that the things we love could end at any time, but not stop that fact from letting us enjoy them.
