10 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy Sin City
3. Why The Women Are There
When it comes to women, erm, Frank Miller is pretty terrible. Mostly every depiction of a female character in one of his comics involves them being in a state of undress, uncontrollably sexually promiscuous, and mostly one dimensional. This is probably owing to, as he identified in a recent interview, his desire to see a return of the "1940s-style gentleman", whom he believes had a "biological function" to protect women. Because they're all larger than women, apparently. Which certainly makes sense when you consider the other big influence on Sin City, besides hardboiled detective stories, is medieval tales of gallant and chivalrous knights saving fair maidens. Considering this is Sin City, however, all the damsels in distress can't be fair maidens - far from it. So what are they instead? Oh yeah, prostitutes. We probably spoilt that surprise by mentioning it in the list of Miller's favoured occupations for female characters. Remember when he made Catwoman one in Batman: Year One? Tsk. Could've been worse, however. Selina could have been in Basin rather than Gotham, a city where literally every woman is descended from the ladies of the night that were shipped in to entertain miners during the California Gold Rush. Women were only introduced to Sin City so they could have sex with dudes. Which is why most of the women who turn up in the comics are prostitutes. Gun-toting, badass prostitutes, true. But prostitutes nonetheless. We guess that's just how things work there.
