One of the best modern writers of Batman is Scott Snyder. His run on 'The New 52' refreshed the character's cannon making it palatable for both new and old readers alike. Snyder knows what makes Batman great, and there's no better example of this than 'All Star Batman Volume 1: My Own Worst Enemy'.

After Two-Face commits a particularly heinous act in Gotham City, Batman and his companion Duke decide to take the villain to a safe house in the heart of rural America where it might be possible to cure him of his villainy. Unfortunately for the duo, Two-Face has set an open bounty on Bat's head and everyone, friend and foe, is looking for a piece.

Many writers of Batman tend to lean into the dark and gritty, which, while fine and all eventually can get tiring after a bit. With 'All Star' Snyder and the rest of the creative team are more interested in the brighter side of the character.

'My Own Worst Enemy' is about believing in the best in people at the worst of times and fighting for hope of a better tomorrow. That may sound naive or cheesy to some, but at the end of the day that's what superheroes have always been about since day one.

Snyder understands that what separates a hero from a run-of-the-mill vigilante is hope, something everyone could use a little more of. Plus, who doesn't love a good road trip?
