Writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale are the best creative dynamic duo to hit the world of comics since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Now, that's a big comparison to make, but it's one the two have earned, especially when taking into account their work for DC.

'The Long Halloween' is one of the best versions of Batman ever put to page, however their equally great follow up 'Dark Victory' tends to get overshadowed by its predecessor.

'Dark Victory' is a direct sequel to 'The Long Halloween'. The fourteen issues comic follows Batman's investigation into a string of killings by a murderer known as the Hangman and Two-Face's war against the crime families of Gotham. Included in the mix is Batman taking Dick Grayson under his wing as Robin and his complex relationship with Catwoman.

If there was ever a time to use the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink" it would be when talking about 'Dark Victory'. There's Batman and Catwoman's relationship, him adopting and training Dick, Two-Face's chaotic gang war, and mysterious serial killings.

Not just that, but the amount of villains featured here is borderline ridiculous. Even Calendar Man makes an appearance. Though despite all of these plot lines going on, Loeb and Sale manage to keep everything feeling streamline and as coherent as possible.

'The Long Halloween' and 'Dark Victory' are the perfect starting point for anyone jumping into Batman comics. Just make sure to give them both the love they so rightly deserve.
