When it comes to storytelling mediums, comics are as diverse and varied as movies or TV, but they're still often collectively pigeonholed as simple action-adventure superhero stories geared toward kids and teens.
Of course there is quite a bit of superhero fiction within comic book pages, but there's also plenty of horror stories, sci-fi, slice of life, and any other genre you can think of. Sadly, people tend to pass over all the lesser known publishers, writers, and characters, in favor of the more familiar Superman, and Avengers stories.
It's understandable for people to gravitate toward the familiar established properties, especially considering how Marvel and DC market their books - judging by DC's ads, you'd expect Batman-centric stories to make up around eighty percent of their comics - but focusing on the titles you already know means missing out on tons of great content that you might not even be aware of, or simply haven't taken a chance on.
If you've been curious about what series is worth checking out, but hesitant to take a risk on a new title, this list is for you.
