Given that it still surprises people to hear that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are actually comic book characters, it probably shouldn't be all that surprising that some of their best books are also somewhat overlooked.

Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the Heroes in a Half Shell have been going strong since the mid-eighties, but their most enjoyable comic didn't arrive until 2011, courtesy of IDW.

The new book rebooted the Turtles and elected to tell a brand new story, one that revolved around the Turtles, their Master Splinter and Shredder being locked in an eternal reincarnated struggle throughout the ages. It was the perfect reimagining, masterminded by Eastman itself, and the book has remained IDW's most consistent, having released its 90th issue this January.

It's a great run, spearheaded by Eastman and other writers Tom Waltz and Bobby Curnow, and with a smorgasbord of artists by their side, including Dan Duncan. There are literally dozens of collections now based on this comic, but despite garnering praise and publicity upon its initial publication, Turtles hasn't been lauded in the same way since.
