In the single weirdest Superman death of all time, the conclusion of Superman: What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? closes with Superman himself killing off his heroic form, in a total twist that reveals the Man of Steel climactic death that is foreshadowed throughout the entire series.

After killing Mr. Mxyzptlk by tearing him between universes, Superman realises he has broken his oath not to kill by purposefully killing the creature from the 5th dimension, and vows to end his hero career then and there.

We see Superman walk into a room labelled 'Gold Kryptonite', and while this initially looks like total suicide, it is later shown that this only killed off Kent's ability to be Superman by permanently removing his superpowers.

Although Clark Kent lives on, Lois is correct in saying she 'Never saw Superman again' because, with Kent being stripped of his superpowers, Superman has ceased to exist - with Clark killing off his beloved hero form in order to redeem himself from committing murder. That said, this humanised Kent seems pretty happy with his lot in life when he see him after this in Action Comics #583, so maybe it was the right call.
