10 Devastating Comic Book Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

5. The Sentry - Siege #4 (2010)

Spider-Man Death
Marvel Comics

With the power of a million exploding suns flowing through his body, Robert Reynolds, aka The Sentry, has enough power to give Thanos a run for his money.

However, Reynolds doesn't get involved with superheroics as much as he'd like, due to his mental instability. Years ago, Robert developed a split-personality, which created a malevolent alter called The Void. Even though Reynolds buried The Void in his subconscious, it left him constantly on edge, which is why the Avengers rarely call for his aid.

But when Norman Osborn took over the Avengers, he summoned the Sentry for every mission, oblivious how his work was affecting his mind. After Osborn made Sentry destroy Asgard, his mind snapped, causing The Void to awaken.

Iron Man rammed a helicarrier into The Void, allowing Reynolds to regain control over his mind momentarily. Knowing his malevolent personality would return any second, Robert begged his friends to kill him. Left with no choice, Thor slaughtered Reynolds, before casting his remains into the Sun.

Because Robert Reynolds was a mentally ill victim, many readers assumed this story would conclude with the Avengers ensuring he sought psychological help. To watch Thor, of all people, obliterate Sentry to dust was an absolute shocker.
