10 Devastating Comic Book Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere
2. Rick Grimes - The Walking Dead #191-192 (2019)
The Walking Dead never had any qualms with killing off beloved characters. Having said that, readers were hoping protagonist Rick Grimes would make it to the end of the story. Because he tried more than anyone to find peace in a zombie-infested world, despite losing his hand, wife, and unborn child, no one deserved a happy ending more than Rick.
So, when he reached a zombie-free community called the Commonwealth, it felt like Rick could finally hang up his boots.
But when Rick saw the corruption of the Commonwealth leader, Pamela Milton, he couldn't help sticking his nose in. After he ended Pamela's tyrannical reign, Grimes retired to his quarters.
During the night, Pamela's son Sebastian broke into Rick's room, telling him he destroyed his mother's reputation. Although Grimes tries to calm him down, Sebastian shot him before storming off.
Even though it looked like Rick was done for, most readers hoped the deputy sheriff would pull through. I mean, Rick Grimes cheated death over a dozen times. Surely he could shrug off a bullet to the chest, right?
But that wasn't the case. When his son, Carl, opened Rick's bedroom door the following morning, he saw his father had become a zombie. Out of instinct, Carl shot him dead.
What makes Rick's death so palpable is how ironic it is. Even though he fought a million zombies, he was killed by a random man he barely knew. He died in the Commonwealth, which was the safest place in the world. Worst of all, Rick passed away immediately after the zombies no longer posed a threat.
