10 Devastating Comic Book Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

3. Alfred - Batman #77 (2019)

Spider-Man Death
DC Comics

After Bane got his hands on a nuclear bomb - which is pretty easy to do in the land of comics - he quickly took control of Gotham. To ensure Batman didn't stand in his way, the musclebound luchadore kidnapped Alfred Pennyworth and vowed to kill him if The Bat Family set foot in his city.

Refusing to back down, Bruce's son Damian entered Gotham, preparing to rescue his father's trusted butler. After being attacked by a parallel version of Bruce Wayne's father (long story), Damian was knocked out.

When the young Wayne awoke, he was surprised to see Bane in front of him, standing behind Alfred. Before Damian had a chance to react, the powerhouse grabbed Alfred's neck, snapping it like a twig.

Alfred's death was so unexpected, comic fans refused to believe it. That's not an exaggeration. Because Batman's trusted valet has been a part of comics since the 1940s, many readers were adamant he would never be killed off, especially in such an unceremonious way.

Only after we saw Batman holding his dear friend's corpse several issues later did readers finally accept Alfred Pennyworth was no more.
