10 Dumbest Decisions Marvel Heroes Have Ever Made

5. Professor X Pretends He's Dead - X-Men #42-65 (1968-1970)

Peter Parker
Marvel Comics

After the X-Men witnessed Professor Charles Xavier being mortally wounded in an explosion, they were forced to say goodbye to their beloved teacher. Even though they no longer had their leader, they continued to fight the good fight, battling a pterodactyl man, a wicked pharaoh, and a master yogi (No, really).

Upon learning that the world was about to be decimated by the Z'Nox aliens, the X-Men were baffled to see Xavier stroll into the room, alive and well. The professor explained that he had faked his death so he could prepare for the invasion in secret without any distractions. He also casually mentions that Jean Grey knew Xavier was alive the whole time but was sworn not tell anybody. (Way to throw Jean under the bus there, Xavier.)

After Polaris amplified his psychic powers, Xavier used his telepathy to defeat the Z'Nox once and for all. Even though the prof saved the world, it still seemed non-sensical why he didn't tell the X-Men his plan sooner since it would've given the team more time to prepare an efficient plan to stop the extra-terrestrials.
