10 Essential Horror Comics Fans Must Read

5. Tales From The Crypt

What list of essential frights would be complete without at least mentioning one of the comic series that started it all? Tales From The Crypt is one of the most legendary horror anthology series in comic book history, and not just because it inspired the equally legendary TV show of the same name.

Tales From The Crypt only centers around one constant character, and that's the eponymous Crypt-keeper. Lover of terrible puns and stories of terror and murder, this ghoulish host guided readers through each issues morbid, lurid tales of comeuppance. But what set it apart from the show was that it actually had more than one type of terror to tell, whereas the show primarily dealt in horrible people getting what they deserved.

It's unlikely that we'll see a revival of EC comics' classic series, but maybe that's for the best. Part of its charm, after all, is its pulpy, boilerplate nature. A new version would inevitably forget what made kids back then gravitate to it in the first place. There's only one Tales From The Crypt, accept no substitutes.
