10 Essential Horror Comics Fans Must Read
3. Marvel Zombies
If there was one horror series that defined the mid-2000s comic world, it would definitely be Marvel Zombies.
This macabre, mean spirited and just flat out gruesome take on the Marvel universe was unlike anything the comic reading public had read, even in the try-hard days of the mid-noughties. It was this mix of disturbing body horror and classic, Sam Raimi-esque gallows humor where all of the Marvel characters suddenly went mad from a zombie plague that's overtaken the world. But unlike most zombie plagues, the characters afflicted maintain their intelligence and higher brain functions. They're able to plan, plot, and strategize, which basically makes them unstoppable.
Every story centering around this little corner of the Marvel multiverse always ends in tragedy or hilarious bleakness. This is a universe with nothing but utter giggling contempt for the Marvel universe and the characters within, and yeah, that can be a turn off for some people. Shock of shocks, not everyone is gonna gel with a story where Ant Man keeps Black Panther alive so he can carve off a little bit of him at a time and eat him slower - it's just not a story for everyone.
But if you're the kind of gore hound who gets off on sick stuff like that, pick up Marvel Zombies and give it a try.
