2. The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead has come to define an entire generation of horror stories for the comic reading public with its horrifyingly real portrayal of the living dead that hadn't been seen to such a degree since the heyday of George A. Romero.

The story - about a cop who wakes up from a coma to find the human race in a losing battle with the undead - has gripped audiences both in its original form and in the form of the television series on AMC.

Like all great zombie fiction, The Walking Dead understood that the true horror comes from your fellow survivors who - driven to desperation by the sight of their fallen loved ones risen from the grave, or simply unburdened by consequence now that society has collapsed - show their true colors. And those colors are rarely anything bright.

The Walking Dead is bleak, brutal and most of all unrelenting. It never gives you a single moment to look away.
