10 Great DC Elseworlds Comics EVERY Fan Must Read

8. The Golden Age

Kingdom Come 1
DC Comics

The main issue with the heroes of DC's golden age - Sandman, Hourman, the original Flash and so forth - is that they're kinda one note. There's not a lot to separate any of them from each other. Just a bunch of beefy middle aged white guys. That is, outside of the DC Elseworlds tale, The Golden Age, of course.

As anyone casually aware of comics history will tell you, the golden age heroes - as a means of propaganda - were shipped off to world war 2 to fight the Nazis. This comic, however, asks the pertinent question of what happened to these heroes when they returned home in the years after the war.

Short answer, nothing good. Some of them have had their minds destroyed by the experiences of war, some are put under the paranoid microscope of the MacCarthy anti-communist witch hunts, and some struggle with addiction to the very sources of their power.

It's an ultimately optimistic, but no less harrowing, look at the personal lives of some of DC's oldest heroes.
