10 Great DC Elseworlds Comics EVERY Fan Must Read

7. Batman: Holy Terror

Kingdom Come 1
DC Comics

Despite many great writers attempts to spin him to the contrary, people still look to Batman as a weapon OF the establishment rather than as one AGAINST it. I mean, you can change what you like about him, but the basic fantasy is still a rich white capitalist using his wealth to punch poverty in the face instead of fixing it.

But one story actually did succeed in an anti-establishment interpretation of Batman, and that was Batman: Holy Terror.

In this universe, America is a puritanical theocracy the likes of which would make any GOP senator salivate. In this new universe, Bruce is a reverend who learns from his buddy Inquisitor Gordon that his parents were murdered by the state for providing aid to "social undesirables".

Filled with righteous anger, he dons the cape and cowl to fight against this tyrannical system.

Alan Brennet and Norm Breyfogle craft a stunning and bleak reimagining of America, and a righteous and rebellious reimagining of Batman to make a dystopian tale that you won't soon forget. Just make sure you don't accidentally pick up Frank Miller's Holy Terror instead, that one is not a fun time.
