Few things can make you realise your own demise is imminent more than seeing your beating heart held up in front of your face.

For Hellboy, that was his unfortunate fate in the six-issue combined tale of The Storm and the Fury.

As The Storm and the Fury draws to a close, Red has toppled Nimue, her army, and even took down a damn dragon. Just as it looks like our cigar-chomping hero has saved the day, the spirit of Nimue rises from said dragon and rips out Hellboy's heart.

"Son of a..." perfectly sums up the major shock of this moment, while also being perfectly in line with Hellboy's standard dialogue and delivery. With that, the BPRD favourite is turned to a pile of dust, eventually resurfacing in Hell to battle the monsters and demons - including Beelzebub himself - in the 'does exactly as it says on the tin' run of Hellboy in Hell books that soon followed.
