DC Comics

Hellblazer was a horror title that ran for 300 issues from 1988-2013 and was Vertigo’s longest-running book. It featured English street magician, con man, occult detective, and rogue, John Constantine, and his small cast of allies and acquaintances. Constantine was created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette, and John Ridgway, and he's since been made a part of the mainstream DC Universe, has appeared in numerous other titles, and is a key player in the Justice League Dark.

John Constantine often did things that were morally and legally questionable but necessary for the greater good. Because of this, Constantine is not the squeaky-clean hero. Nor is he an antihero in the traditional sense. John is a different kind of hero. He does what he has to do to achieve that goal at that moment and hang the consequences. He wouldn’t be caught dead in a cape. He doesn’t care about truth and justice, and he is literally haunted by his mistakes.

One of Constantine’s better known successes was when he cured his cancer by selling his soul to three separate demon lords, and any of them collecting would start a civil war in Hell. Constantine’s failures are numerous and his attempts to fix them are the backbone of this classic series. Watching him try to hold a world crumbling around him together is worth the price.
