Hellboy is the creation of writer and artist Mike Mignola and first appeared on the cover of San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2. The character is a half-human half-demon from Hell that is considered to be the “world’s greatest paranormal investigator.” He works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence, along with a number of interesting characters including psychic amphibious merman Abe Sapien, pyrokinetic Liz Sherman, and Johann Kraus, the spirit of a German medium in a containment suit.

Hellboy’s trip from Hell is directly connected to the “Mad Monk” Grigori Rasputin, who was performing a ritual to attempt to change the fortunes of the Nazis, who were losing the war. In “Seeds of Destruction”, Hellboy searched for his missing adopted father and the head of the BPRD, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, only to watch the man be consumed by a frog monster straight out of the mind of H.P. Lovecraft.

In “Hellboy: Darkness Calls," Hellboy refused the crown of King of the witches and must battle the Russian witch Baba Yaga in her own dimension. In “Hellboy: The Wild Hunt”, he learned that he was a direct descendant of King Arthur Pendragon and must reluctantly wield Excalibur to battle Nimue’s witch army. Mike Mignola has created a world where folklore, Lovecraftian horror, history, superheroes, and fiction all work together.
