Hal Jordans death and transformation into Parallax may seem like an odd inclusion in a list about sacrifices, but the circumstances by which he is forced out of the Lantern Corps and his turn towards evil is one that shows much hardship and goodwill. Having witnessed the destruction of Coast City, Hal Jordan seeks to recreate his hometown, bringing back people who had died and reforming structures using the might of the Green Lantern ring. This brought him into direct confrontation with the Lantern Corps, and he was forced to drain the Lanterns Main Power source as a means to permanently rebuild his lost city. This saw him turn to the power of fear, and with a swift change in costume the man who had saved the day so many times as Green Lantern was turned into the latest evil incarnation of Parallax. Turning to the dark side may be a bad choice (just look at Anakin Skywalker) but the reason he turned against his former allies was not selfish, it was an attempt to fix his own mistake of not being able to prevent destruction. Turning into Parallax killed the man who was Green Lantern, creating a new character to haunt the Green Lantern Corps. In many ways he sacrifice his good soul for the people of Coast City, can we afford not to mention this selfless act?
