Jack Kirby - what a legend.

An artist and writer at Marvel before it was even called that, Kirby helped create some of the most iconic characters ever to grace a comic book page.

Black Panther, Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the original X-Men, and one of the most interesting individuals in the entire Marvel universe, the Silver Surfer.

Debuting in 1966, the Surfer initially served as a scout for the planet-eating Galactus, flying around the universe looking for worlds for him to scoff.

However, after arriving on Earth, the Fantastic Four managed to convince the Surfer to spare the planet. Good news for Earth, bad news for the silver guy, as he was confined there as punishment.

In Fantastic Four #76, after many years of being stuck on the human world, the Surfer finally regained his ability to soar through the stars.

As illustrated by this panel of Kirby's own making, the metallic alien is thrilled to regain his ability to travel.

The Surfer's joyful expression, combined with Kirby's enticing interpretation of the universe behind him, makes this a joyous picture through and through.
