One of the great things about basing a comic book hero off a real figure in mythology is that there are tonnes of existing characters you can nick.

A great figure in Norse mythology is Jormungandr, also known as the World Serpent. The child of Loki (what is he like?), Jormungandr the enormous snake was cast out by Odin and now swims in the giant sea that surrounds the Earth.

Legend has it that, when it releases its grip on its own tail, Ragnarok will begin and he and Thor will fight each other to the death.

Sounds like a great idea for a comic!

Marvel's Thor battled his version of the big wet dragon in Thor #380 from 1987.

This panel, pencilled by the issue's writer Walter Simonson, depicts the two in the middle of combat, but still finding time to jaw-jack.

Naturally.

The usually intimidating hero of Asgard looks tiny compared to his massive enemy, who sprawls out over both pages. Jormungandr looks utterly ferocious here, posing a serious threat to the blond-haired Avenger.

In the end, both parties fight each other so hard that they create a new star. Now that's a battle worthy of a splash page.
