3. Galactus Calls - Fantastic Four #74

Spider Man No More
Marvel Comics

Just two issues before the freedom of the Silver Surfer, his boss was causing a whole heap of trouble for residents of planet Earth.

When the Surfer stops answering his calls, Galactus sends the Punisher after him. When that doesn't work, the world-gobbling villain decides to take matters into his own giant hands.

Galactus arrives to seek the Surfer himself, who has gone into hiding in the world between worlds. To illustrate just how momentous this was, Jack Kirby decided to draw the devourer in his most frightening form yet.

He looks enormous here, so big that he doesn't even fit on the page. He dwarfs the various cosmic entities that surround him, which should indicate just how powerful he really is.

Though comic book fans had seen Galactus before, they'd never seen him like this. This was a boss enemy done right; a towering beast with no apparent weakness, ready to crush everything in his path to achieve his goals.

Marvel have one hell of a big bad in Galactus, and it's panels like this that make the character such an intimidating presence.

Nice work, Mr. Kirby.
