10 Greatest Superhero Replacements That Outshone The Originals

4. Hal Jordan - Green Lantern

The Human Torch Johnny Storm
DC Comics

Green Lantern was created by Bill Finger during the Golden Age of Comics. Alan Scott was a railroad engineer who discovered a magic lantern. This object gave him abilities and turned him into the first Green Lantern. Because comic books were waning in popularity after World War II, the title was cancelled shortly thereafter.

Julius Schwartz, the man responsible for revamping numerous titles, then decided to revive Green Lantern. But the character would undergo a new identity, origin, costume and a new set of villains. This time around, the hero was pilot Hal Jordan. After discovering Abin Sur, the dying alien entrusted his ring to Jordan. This enabled Hal to become the Green Lantern. The series also introduced the Green Lantern Corps: a space police force that patrolled the galaxy.

The pilot's legacy as the Green Lantern would inspire and define future stories to come. While Alan Scott was the first, Hal Jordan is the best. While there would be more Lanterns - such as Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz - they all wouldn't exist without the creation of Hal Jordan.
