10 Greatest Superhero Replacements That Outshone The Originals

5. Carol Danvers - Captain Marvel

The Human Torch Johnny Storm
Marvel Comics

The first Captain Marvel was created in the Silver Age of Comics and was a man named Mar-Vell. He was a member of the Kree Empire and was sent to Earth. Sent to spy on the human race, he became a superhero to protect the earthlings. He then encountered a woman named Carol Danvers. Working for the US Air Force, she was caught in an explosion and sustained numerous injuries. Little did she know however, that the accident would change her life forever.

The explosion gave her powers and led to her becoming the superhero, Ms. Marvel. The transformation turned her into a Kree-Human hybrid. Her solo series was deemed socially progressive at the time and Danvers became a feminist icon. It was also noteworthy that she was one of the few female heroes in the Marvel Universe to have solo title.

In 2012, after the death of Mar-Vell, Carol assumed the title and became the new Captain Marvel. As one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, Carol Danvers overshadowed Mar-Vell's time as the superhero and launched the character into mainstream popularity.
