10 Heartbreaking Moments Comic Book Characters Realised THEY Were The Villain

1. Captain America - Secret Empire

Death of Captain America
Marvel Comics

There are those villains who understand that they are the bad guy and there are those who wholeheartedly believe they are in the right.

Steve Rogers believed he was doing what was the "right" thing after the Red Skull had used the Tesseract to influence Steve's past and turned him into a Hydra agent.

The infamous comic panel of Captain America uttering the words "hail Hydra" was the talking point on every Marvel fan's lips. Hydra Captain America almost brought down the entirety of the Avengers, Sheild, and American government in one fail swoop.

To make matters worse, this Steve was actually able to wield Mjolnir, proving that he was still worthy of the Asgardian weapon.

After so much death and destruction, Steve was eventually confronted by his past self via some manipulation of the Tesseract. Rattled by his former self's words, Steve tried to bring a swift end to the conflict and reached for Mjolnir once more.

Only this time, he was no longer worthy of the hammers magic. Realising he was defeated, Steve was taken into custody and imprisoned in a facility known as the Shadow Pillar (which sounds much cooler than the Raft).
