Marvel Comics

After the multiverse had been recreated in the aftermath of Secret Wars, Reed Richards, Susan Storm, and their children disappeared. When Ben and Johnny were unable to locate their comrades, it was believed they were dead, causing the team to dissolve.

After several months, Ben Grimm and Johnny noticed their powers were on the fritz. When they contacted a superhuman specialist, the duo discovered their abilities are only stable if the Fantastic Four were in constant contact. Terrified they would be depowered for good, Ben travelled the multiverse with Johnny, hoping to find his friends.

After journeying through time and space, Ben and Johnny were happy to learn Reed, Sue, and their kids were living peacefully in an alternate universe. However, Ben was surprised to learn that his best friend faked his death and moved his family to a different dimension.

Reed explained to Ben that he had to pretend he was dead since he discovered that Doctor Doom turned evil in every universe BECAUSE of him. Reed reasoned that if Doom believed Reed was gone, his arch-nemesis would abandon his life of supervillainy. Although Ben understood his friend's rationale, he convinced Reed and Sue to rejoin the team.
