When a member of Fantastic Four take a sabbatical or quit, the gang usually find a replacement and carry on. But when Johnny Storm was murdered by Annihilus' army, the team were too heartbroken to continue. As a result, Reed Richards said they would no longer take part in official superhero business, allowing him to focus entirely on his work.

Over time, the stretchy superhero became disillusioned with how limited the scientific community was and decided to reinvent the Fantastic Four as a science-based group called the Future Foundation.

Reed introduced all wakes of life into his new community including Atlanteans, androids, clones, mutants, and his old nemesis, Doctor Doom! Even the web-slinger himself, Spider-Man, agreed to join the Future Foundation, believing it was the best place to implement his scientific acumen to better the world.

But everyone knows the Fantastic Four are never gone for good. When Annihilus resurrected Johnny Storm (which was awfully nice of the insect overlord considering he killed him in the first place), the fire-conjuring hero returned to his teammates, reviving the Fantastic Four yet again.
