While in high school, there was a student who was utterly infatuated with Susan Storm. When he learned she was in love with Reed Richards, the student did what anyone does in comics and became a supervillain then and there.

Many years later, this person, now calling himself the Quiet Man, orchestrated events to cause humanity to turn against the Fantastic Four.

After he set the team up so it appeared their incompetence led to an alien invasion, the superheroes were brought to court. As the prosecutor made countless references to the FF's dangerous actions over the years, the US government shut down The Baxter Building and confiscated all its technology.

With everyone against them, the Fantastic Four was effectively shut down. Adding insult to injury, the Quiet Man had the Thing framed for murder, forcing him to be imprisoned in a power-dampening section of Rikers Island.

Luckily, Reed learned about the Quiet Man's involvement, exposing him to the authorities. This caused the charges against the Thing to be dropped and the Fantastic Four had their property and tech returned to them.
