While fighting a horde of supervillains in Stamford, a young superteam called The New Warriors misused their powers, resulting in the deaths of 600 citizens.

Because of this tragedy, it wasn't long before society turned on anyone with superpowers. While Johnny Storm was partying one night, a random citizen flew into a rage and attacked him, blaming him for the deaths in Stamford. Johnny was injured so badly, he was left hospitalised, much to Sue's horror.

With tension in the US rising after the Stamford incident, the government criminalised all superhero activity unless vigilantes worked for the government. Although many superheroes were up in arms about this new registration act, Reed Richards believed it was justified considering the circumstances.

Sue was so insulted by Reed's mentality, especially after what happened to her brother, they had a falling out. Hating how this new law was turning friends against each other, the Thing left America and moved to France.

Although Reed promised his teammates everything would work out, his direct actions lead to the death of fellow Avenger, Black Goliath. When Sue saw Reed still championing the Registration Act despite all the horror it caused, she left him.
