10 Horror Comics Worse Than Your Nightmares

8. Neonomicon

Alan Moore's take on the Cthulu mythos delivered some of the writer's most controversial work to date. Published by Avatar Comics in 2008, Neonomicon is a story of Cthulu cultists, and the unfortunate FBI agents investigating the case. Following a lead to Salem, Massachusetts, agents Brears and Lampers are unwittingly lured to the lair of the Fishman - where Lampers is murdered and Brears left to the monster's mercy.

Described by Moore as HP Lovecraft, but with all of the unpleasant racial and sexual stuff "put back in", Neonomicon is one of the writer's most disturbing stories.

Rarely have Lovecraft's creations looked so disturbing as they do in Jacen Burrows' magnificently nightmarish illustrations - especially the imposing yet slightly pathetic Fishman. By this point, Moore had already penned this story's progenitor, The Courtyard, and would go on to its sequel, Providence.

Nothing, however, would be so terrible as his treatment of poor Agent Brears. The Shape of Water this ain't.
