10 Horror Comics Worse Than Your Nightmares
3. The Sandman
When it comes to nightmare fuel, it's only proper that Neil Gaiman's Vertigo series The Sandman should be high on the list. Its hero may have been Lord of the Dreaming, but Morpheus was a dab hand when it came to nightmares too.
Take, for example, The Sandman's most famous nightmare - The Corinthian. A serial killer with eye sockets full of grinning teeth and a thing for eating eyeballs. Entering the human realm during The Doll's House storyline, The Corinthian is a rogue nightmare "created to be the darkness and the fear of darkness in every human heart." Mission accomplished.
The Corinthian was far from the only entity to terrify readers. The series' most horrifying stories comes early on, in the tale '24 Hours'. Here, the supervillain Doctor Destiny holds a group of patrons hostage at a 24-hour diner. Over the course of 24 hours (geddit), Destiny forces his victims through a series of rapidly escalating brutalities - facing their darkest secrets, indulging in their basest instincts and, ultimately, murdering each other.
Why?
Because he could.
