10 Horror Comics Worse Than Your Nightmares

4. Hellblazer

DC and Vertigo Comics' premier horror franchise, Hellblazer is the stomping ground of John Constantine - magician, Sting-lookalike, ageing punk and all-around hell, ah, raiser.

Since his creation in the pages of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Constantine has battled every imaginable form of ghost, demon and supernatural threat - and then some. This isn't the clean-cut, heart-of-gold ruffian of the TV shows either - the John Constantine of the Vertigo Hellblazer years is a real bastard.

True to form, the original Hellblazer line contains some of the most disturbing horror comics ever created, but it's in the early issues where Hellblazer is at its creepiest. From hunger-demons to Satantic rituals and a weird sex pact with Swamp Thing, there's something in there to please (or horrify) most horror fans. The book is at its best when it's dirty, disheveled and a little rough around the edges. A bit like the man himself.
