10 Hulk Fates Worse Than Death

1. Becoming A Gamma-Infected Rage Monster - Incredible Hulk #1

When you're talking about fates worse than death for a character in a Hulk comic, the one that has to top the list is simply becoming a hulk. When Dr. Bruce Banner was exposed to the radiation of his Gamma Bomb in Incredible Hulk #1, his life was forever destroyed.

Becoming the Hulk meant Bruce's life was effectively over, but he had to live on without the people he loved. His would-be father-in-law decided he needed to wage a personal war on him, and that passion-turned-obsession drove General Ross to chase Bruce/Hulk across the planet for decades.

More than that, he couldn't be close to Betty, and doing so didn't help her any. The Hulk is constantly being chased, hunted, hounded, experimented on, imprisoned, and manipulated. Basically, being a Hulk on any version of Earth in Marvel Comics is rarely as cracked up as infinite strength and durability are cracked up to be.

If you go back through the nearly 60 years of Hulk history in Marvel Comics, you won't find many periods of peace for the character. His life is anything but peaceful, which is one reason he's always trying to be left alone, so becoming a Hulk is easily one of the more tragic fates worse than death anyone can suffer.
