10 Iconic Comic Book Moments (That Are Secretly Terrible)

9. The Death Of The Heroes - The Infinity Gauntlet

The Infinity Gauntlet is the most famous Marvel crossover ever, more so after its story was incorporated into Avengers: Infinity War. In this six-parter, Thanos has achieved near-godhood after obtaining the six Infinity Gems. After wiping out half of all life in the universe, Adam Warlock leads the heroes of Earth to undo the Mad Titan's actions.

At the time, readers had never seen iconic superheroes being defeated so easily. Hulk and Drax were taken out with a single slap. Wolverine's unbreakable skeleton was turned to rubber. Captain America's "indestructible" shield was destroyed. Thor, Vision, Cyclops, Iron Man, and many others were effortlessly killed.

Witnessing the heroes die should be emotional but it loses its impact when every evil action Thanos committed is reversed at the end of the story. In hindsight, the heroes suffered little consequences or sacrifices, which is anticlimactic considering they faced the biggest threat the universe has ever witnessed.

Obviously, the deaths were reversed in the MCU adaptation but several superheroes did bite the dust for good. Although the deaths in The Infinity Gauntlet were always going to be undone, it would have been more effective if one or two stayed buried longer than two issues.
